Before getting into the details about the different types of chargers, many drivers will want some idea of how long it takes to charge a BMW EV. Here are some of the estimates of how long it will take to get a range of 100 miles based on home charging (Level 2) and public charging (Level 3/DC Fast Charging) stations:

  • BMW i4 Charging Times (Level 2/ High-Powered DC Fast Charging): 4 hours and 30 minutes / 13 minutes
  • BMW i5 Charging Times (Level 2/ High-Powered DC Fast Charging): 4 hours and 15 minutes / 12 minutes
  • BMW iX Charging Times (Level 2/ High-Powered DC Fast Charging): 4 hours and 15 minutes / 12 minutes
  • BMW i7 Charging Times (Level 2/ High-Powered DC Fast Charging): 4 hours and 30 minutes / 12 minutes

What are My Electric Car Charging Options?

Now that you know how quick the BMW electric car charging times can be, let’s dive into the different types of EV chargers. There are three main types of electric car charging options available to EV drivers:

  1. Level 1 Domestic Charging: Nearly all electric vehicles can be plugged into your typical three-prong wall outlet at home. As these outlets are typically lower in power and only reach 110V/120V at a time, they are the slowest charging option available but one of the most accessible.
  2. Level 2 Domestic or Public Charging: When Level 1 charging isn’t enough for your daily commutes, consider having a Level 2 charger professionally installed at home. Able to charge most vehicles at more than double the speed of Level 1 chargers, Level 2 chargers allow you to charge your vehicle to full overnight and provide small top-ups in the middle of the day. BMW recommends the BMW Wallbox or the Flexible Fast Charger to give you the quick Level 2 charging you need at home or on the go.
  3. Level 3 DC Fast Charging: Level 3 charging, also called DC Fast Charging, is the fastest EV charging available. You’ll find DC Fast Charging stations in public around Chapel Hill in places like parking garages, national chain stores, or public buildings like your local library. When you choose a new electric BMW, you can enjoy complimentary DC Fast Charging with Electrify America’s coast-to-coast network of public electric chargers.

Estimated Electric Car Charging Times

Charging times will always vary based on the type of EV you own, its battery capacity, range, and the charger you use. Still, as an average, here are the estimated charging times for each level of electric car charging:

  • Level 1 EV charging can take a day or two to fully charge your vehicle’s battery.
  • Level 2 EV charging can take hours to fully charge your vehicle’s battery, usually overnight.
  • Level 3 EV charging can fully recharge most EVs in an hour or less, or add significant range in 10 to 15 minutes.

  • A Level 2 BMW Wallbox can charge your BMW EV in as little as 12 hours or add up to 30 miles in a single hour of charging.
  • A public Level 3 DC Fast Charger can add up to 90 miles of range in as little as ten minutes and 200 miles in a 30-minute charge.
