Learn to Program Your BMW Key Fob

If you’ve just taken ownership of a new BMW vehicle, you may need to know how to program the BMW key fob. Or, you might have an existing BMW key fob that’s already programmed and you want to program an additional key so a family member can share your vehicle in Raleigh. In either instance, you can learn how to complete the BMW key programmer steps in the guide below!
Starting Fresh: Programming a New BMW Key From Scratch
If you don’t already have a working BMW key fob and you need to know how to set up a new BMW key, here are the BMW key programmer steps you need to follow:
- Remove the metal key from the key fob housing and put it in the ignition.
- In quick succession, turn the key to position 1 and back five times. (You aren’t igniting the engine, just turning on the interior accessories.)
- Remove the key from the ignition and insert it back into the key fob housing. From here on out, you will only be using the buttons on the BMW key fob to complete the programming sequence.
- Hold the down unlock button on the key fob with one finger, then use another to press the BMW logo button 3 times. Then, release the unlock button.
- To finish the syncing process, turn on the ignition.
Programming a Secondary BMW Key Fob
If you already have a working BMW key fob and you want to program a secondary key, here are the steps to do so:
- Enter the vehicle with the functional key fob, as well as the additional fob you want to program. Ensure all doors and windows are shut.
- Remove the metal key from the working key fob and enter it in the ignition to position 1. The dash lights and interior accessories will turn on, but the engine shouldn’t turn over.
- Turn the key back and remove it from the ignition.
- On the working key fob, hold down the unlock button while simultaneously pressing the BMW logo button 3 times, then release the unlock button. You should hear the doors lock and unlock.
- Now on the new key, hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors should cycle once more, at which point you’re done with the process.
