BMW Plug-In Hybrids – What’s the Difference?

Before exploring BMW hybrid options, it’s important to make the distinction between hybrids and plug-in hybrids. A traditional hybrid car runs on gas and electric power simultaneously, but cannot run on electric power alone.

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), often shortened to just “plug-in hybrid,” has a traditional internal combustion engine as well as a separate electric motor. Unlike a standard hybrid, this unique powertrain configuration allows a PHEV to run on full-electric power for a certain number of miles, using no fuel until you switch to gas power. A separate electric motor also means the vehicle cannot self-charge like a traditional hybrid, so PHEV owners will need to plug their vehicle into a designated power source to replenish the electric range (hence the “plug-in hybrid” naming convention).

All of the BMW hybrid cars we’ll discuss below are plug-in hybrids. Read on to learn more about the BMW PHEV models and their performance specs!
